Football icon Barry Sanders is speaking out for the first time about the frightening health scare he faced last year—revealing he suffered a heart attack while on a recruiting trip with his son.
The 56-year-old Hall of Famer and Detroit Lions legend opened up to CBS Sports about the incident, which happened in June 2024. At first, Sanders says he brushed off the discomfort as heartburn—but when the feeling didn’t go away, he knew something wasn’t right.
After leaving his son’s campus visit, Sanders went straight to the emergency room. Tests and a heart catheter procedure confirmed the shocking news: he had experienced a heart attack.
Since then, Sanders says the experience has changed his life—and his lifestyle.
“It’s definitely made me healthier and happier,” he said. “Being the kind of athlete that I was, I used to see people walking and think, ‘What kind of workout is that?’ But now I know there’s something called a heart healthy workout. You’re just raising your heart rate a bit over time—and it’s really good for you.”
He admitted he was once unaware of how important small daily habits could be, but he’s now focused on taking medication, eating better, and incorporating more movement into his routine.
“There was just a certain ignorance I had about things like that,” Sanders said. “But it’s been a learning process.”
Sanders also expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received after making his health scare public last year.
“It meant a lot to me,” he shared, adding that he hopes others use his story as a reminder to take heart health seriously—because everyone’s situation is different, and early warning signs shouldn’t be ignored.
