A stunning off-field scandal is rocking the Kansas City Chiefs after defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was arrested and hit with a domestic battery charge tied to an alleged incident involving his own daughter.
According to reports, Merritt was taken into custody by police in Overland Park around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday night and later booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 10:30 p.m. Authorities say no bond had been set as of early Thursday.
Things escalated quickly the next morning when the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office formally filed a complaint accusing the longtime NFL coach of “unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly” causing bodily harm to a daughter — a disturbing allegation that could have major consequences for his career.
Merritt, 54, is expected to appear in court as the case begins to unfold.
The veteran coach has been a key figure on the Chiefs’ staff since 2019, helping shape one of the league’s most competitive secondaries. Before landing in Kansas City, he built a lengthy résumé with stops at the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and New York Jets, along with time in the college ranks. He also briefly played in the NFL after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1993.
So far, the Chiefs are keeping their distance. The organization acknowledged it is aware of the arrest but declined to comment further — a silence that often signals internal decisions may already be in motion behind the scenes.
If history is any guide, Merritt could soon be placed on leave as the NFL prepares to launch its own investigation under the league’s personal conduct policy — a process that has derailed careers before.
For now, one thing is clear: what started as a routine week in the NFL offseason has exploded into a headline-grabbing controversy that could shake one of the league’s top franchises.

He is done !
Even if he has done absolutely nothing, the accusations will ruin him. that’s just the way this crap works. 🙁
