A shocking case is unfolding at University of Massachusetts Amherst — and it’s left an entire campus reeling.

An award-winning campus chef, once celebrated for his culinary talent, is now at the center of a brutal murder investigation after allegedly killing his wife inside an on-campus hotel room.

Jeffrey MacDonald, 36, served as an executive sous chef for the university and was even named “Chef of the Year” by the American Culinary Federation just last year. But according to police, he admitted to intentionally beating his 31-year-old wife, Emma, with the goal of killing her.

The violent incident reportedly unfolded Wednesday inside a campus hotel, where things escalated so severely that officers responding to the scene ended up in a physical confrontation with MacDonald. Authorities say he struck one officer multiple times and threw objects during the chaotic struggle before he was finally subdued.

Once inside the room, officers discovered Emma — also a university employee — unresponsive.

Investigators allege MacDonald used his hands, feet, and other objects in the deadly attack.

He was taken into custody and appeared in Eastern Hampshire District Court on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder and assault and battery on a police officer.

In the wake of the tragedy, university leadership moved quickly to address concerns across campus. Chancellor Javier Reyes sent a message to staff acknowledging the shock and grief surrounding the case.

“I want to acknowledge that this is heartbreaking and deeply unsettling news for our campus,” he wrote. “Our thoughts are with those affected, including the families, friends, and colleagues of the individuals involved.”

Officials have said there is no ongoing threat — but for many on campus, the disturbing nature of the allegations has left a lasting sense of unease.
