Bruce Springsteen is doubling down on his barbed criticism of Donald Trump, branding him a “moron” and declaring early 2025 an “American tragedy,” in a new profile by The New York Times.
Springsteen explained that it was deeper socio-economic issues—not just Trump himself—that opened the door for such leadership. He told The Times, “It was the combination of the deindustrialization of the country and then the incredible increase in wealth disparity that left so many people behind. It was ripe for a demagogue. And while I can’t believe it was this moron that came along, he fit the bill for some people.”
Reflecting on shocking recent events, Springsteen continued, “We’ve been living through the last 70 days … things that we all said, ‘This can’t happen here.’ ‘This will never happen in America.’ And here we are. It’s an American tragedy.”
On his Land of Hope and Dreams tour, Springsteen has not hesitated to confront Trump. During his May 14 concerts in Manchester, he described Trump’s administration as “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous,” and accused the former president of persecuting dissent. He even opened the tour by delivering a fiery monologue before launching into the political anthem “My City of Ruins”.
Springsteen has since released the Land of Hope & Dreams EP, featuring live versions of those shows—including both the rousing speeches and songs. Support from rock icons like Neil Young and Eddie Vedder poured in after Trump retaliated on Truth Social, calling Springsteen “highly overrated” and demanding investigations into celebrities who supported Vice President Harris.
The feud escalated further when Trump shared a doctored clip of him striking Springsteen with a golf ball—a symbolic jab in this growing media clash.
Despite the hostilities, Springsteen remains steadfast in his approach. He draws hope from America’s democratic roots, citing James Baldwin’s wisdom: “In this world, there isn’t as much humanity as one would like, but there’s enough.” He believes that national solidarity could still reclaim the democratic values under threat.
