Former K-pop idol Moon Taeil, once a member of the globally popular group NCT, has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to rape charges involving a Chinese tourist.

On July 10, the 31-year-old singer — whose full name is Moon Tae-il — was sentenced to three years and six months behind bars by the Seoul Central District Court. Two other men were sentenced alongside him, according to multiple outlets including the BBC, The New York Times, and The Korea Herald.

The disturbing incident occurred last year when Taeil and the other defendants met a female tourist at a bar in Seoul’s Itaewon district. The woman, visiting from China, became heavily intoxicated during the night. According to court documents, the men then took her to one of their homes, where they took turns sexually assaulting her while she was unable to resist.

“The defendants took turns committing sexual acts against the victim, who was severely intoxicated and unable to resist. The nature of the crime is particularly grave,” presiding Judge Lee Hyun-kyung said in court. The judge also noted the emotional trauma inflicted, stating that the victim “likely experienced significant psychological distress” as a foreigner assaulted in an unfamiliar place.

Last month, all three men pleaded guilty to the charge of “special quasi-rape,” which applies when multiple people sexually assault someone who is unconscious or otherwise unable to consent. Prosecutors originally pushed for a seven-year sentence, but the judge cited their lack of prior convictions in issuing the shorter sentence. The trio must also complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program.

In August 2024, SM Entertainment, the powerhouse label behind NCT, officially cut ties with Taeil following the allegations. The label said in a translated statement that it “recognized the seriousness of the issue” and that Taeil could “no longer continue team activities.” Taeil’s social media accounts have since been made private.

Taeil debuted with NCT in 2016 and was a key member of the group’s subunit NCT 127. His sentencing adds him to a growing list of K-pop stars facing serious legal fallout over sexual misconduct. In recent years, former Big Bang member Seungri and singers Jung Joon-young and Choi Jong-hoon were also convicted in high-profile cases involving sexual assault and exploitation.

Taeil’s fall from fame has sent shockwaves through the K-pop world, once again shining a spotlight on the dark side of South Korea’s glittering entertainment industry.
