Beloved television journalist and former Today show co-host Bryant Gumbel was hospitalized Monday night after experiencing a medical emergency at his Manhattan home.

According to sources close to the situation, the 77-year-old was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital shortly after 9 p.m. on October 20. Witnesses reportedly saw Gumbel placed on a gurney as first responders helped him out of his apartment building.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Gumbel remains in the hospital receiving treatment. Details about what exactly caused the emergency have not been shared publicly. However, TMZ reports that a family member has confirmed Gumbel is “OK,” though they did not offer further information on his condition.

Bryant Gumbel has long been a familiar face in American households, known for his 15-year run on NBC’s Today show, beginning in 1982. He made history as the program’s first Black co-anchor and later became a longtime host of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, a role that earned him critical acclaim.

Beyond his career, Gumbel has been open about his past health struggles. In 2009, he revealed he had undergone surgery to remove a malignant tumor and part of his lung. He later shared that he was “free and clear” and remained optimistic about his health.

Gumbel was previously married to June Baranco, with whom he shares two children. In 2002, he married his second wife, Hilary, and the couple remains together.

The news of his hospitalization comes less than a year after the loss of his brother, fellow sportscaster Greg Gumbel, who passed away in 2024 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 78.

Fans are hoping for positive news and a full recovery for the legendary broadcaster.
