Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale shared an emotional message with fans on Thursday, announcing that he’s officially retiring from music after more than five decades onstage. The 74-year-old rocker delivered the news in a heartfelt YouTube video, saying it was finally time to step out of the “platform shoes and skin-tight jeans” that defined his rock-and-roll persona.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the Snake, a special announcement for you,” Coverdale began. He reflected on his incredible 50-plus-year run with Deep Purple, Whitesnake, and Jimmy Page, explaining that the past few years made it clear the moment had come to “call it a day.” With his trademark humor, he added, “And as you can see, we’ve taken care of the lion’s wig.”

Raising a glass to the camera, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer thanked the people who shaped his journey: “I love you dearly. I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey. All the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It’s amazing.”

The announcement closed with a nostalgic montage of Coverdale’s long career, set to Whitesnake’s 2011 track “Fare Thee Well” — a fitting sendoff for a legend bidding goodbye to the stage.
