Rumer Willis has shared a deeply heartbreaking update about her father Bruce Willis’ battle with dementia, revealing that he no longer recognizes her during some of her visits.
The 37-year-old actress fought back tears while speaking to fans during an Instagram Q&A, opening up about the painful reality of watching her father slip further into frontotemporal dementia.
“People always ask me how he’s doing, and it’s such a hard question,” she said. “Anybody with FTD is not doing great… but he’s doing okay for someone living with this disease.”
Then came the emotional truth she admitted has been the hardest to accept: Bruce doesn’t always know who she is anymore.
Rumer said she still feels grateful for every visit she gets with her dad, even when recognition fades. “When I go over there and I give him a hug—whether he recognizes me or not—I know he can feel my love. And I can feel it back from him,” she shared. “I still see a spark of him.”
She added that being able to bring her daughter Louetta to see Bruce has become an especially meaningful part of their time together.
Bruce Willis, who shares Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah with Demi Moore, and daughters Mabel and Evelyn with his wife Emma Heming, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in February 2023.
Emma recently revealed that their children “miss their dad so much,” acknowledging the pain of watching Bruce miss important milestones. She also spoke about her own grief, saying she’s learning to “walk alongside it” every day.
Bruce now lives in a separate one-story residence where he receives constant care from specialists, a decision Emma says was the safest and most compassionate choice for him and their family.
