A father of two described as having a “heart of gold” tragically died in a hunting accident in Louisiana last week.

Garret Verdun, 45, of Raceland, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday, Nov. 29, around 4 p.m., according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO).

Verdun’s hunting partner told authorities that the two were walking to their hunting spots when they crossed a cattle guard. As Verdun attempted to pass his rifle to his partner, the weapon accidentally discharged, authorities said.

The LDWF is assisting LPSO with the ongoing investigation.

Verdun’s obituary describes him as someone with “a heart of gold, always ready to lend a hand or offer a comforting word.” It added that he found “the greatest joy” in spending time with his two children, Chloe and Ethan, and sharing laughter with his fiancée, Tiffany Hunter.

An avid outdoorsman, Verdun was also passionate about carpentry and building, and above all, he put his family first. “He had a contagious smile that will be missed beyond words,” his obituary continued.

His 19-year-old daughter, Chloe, shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, writing, ‘I wish more than anything I wouldn’t be making this post but I’m so blessed to have shared 19 years with you. I love you forever dad and always will. You will forever be my role model and favorite person. Until we meet again, forever will be your love bug … please pray for myself, my brother and our family during this devastating time.’
