A terrifying apartment fire in California turned into a jaw-dropping rescue after police officers caught a toddler and a dog thrown from a second-story balcony as flames ripped through the building.
The dramatic moment happened Saturday afternoon in Milpitas. Around 3:15 p.m., dispatchers received frantic calls reporting that an apartment complex was on fire and spreading quickly, according to the Milpitas Police Department.
When officers arrived less than two minutes later, they found the building engulfed in flames. Panicked residents were trapped on a second-floor patio with no clear way out.
Bodycam footage released by police shows officers racing toward the building and shouting instructions to the family above.
“Where’s the baby? Throw her! Throw her! … I got her, I got her!” one officer can be heard yelling.
In a heart-stopping moment, the 3-year-old girl is dropped from the balcony and caught in the arms of an officer below. Screams can be heard from the family as the rescue unfolds.
Seconds later, a small white dog is tossed from the burning patio. The animal appears to nearly slip past the officer’s hands before being secured safely.

Firefighters quickly moved in to evacuate the remaining tenants. Miraculously, no injuries were reported in the blaze.
“We are incredibly thankful for the calm and courage shown by the residents during such a terrifying moment, and for the seamless teamwork between our dispatchers, officers, and fire personnel,” the department said in a statement.
What could have ended in tragedy instead became a powerful example of split-second bravery — and a rescue that was all captured on camera.
