A dream cruise took a heartbreaking turn overnight after a crew member vanished into the ocean, triggering a massive emergency response.
Search efforts have now been suspended after a crew member fell overboard from the Norwegian Breakaway while it was traveling from Bermuda back to Boston.
According to the United States Coast Guard, the incident happened early Sunday, about 12 miles off the coast of Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Officials say the crew member was seen on security footage going overboard, plunging into the dark waters below.
The ship, which had been carrying passengers on a 7-day round-trip cruise to Bermuda, immediately went into emergency mode. A ship-wide “man overboard” alert was issued, and lifeboats were launched as crews scrambled to search the area.
Rescue teams quickly joined the effort. A Coast Guard helicopter arrived shortly after 1:15 a.m., scanning the waters from above, while crews from Station Provincetown searched by sea. Another helicopter was deployed later that morning as the search intensified.
Despite hours of effort, the search was officially suspended just after noon “pending new information,” leaving many onboard shaken.
Passengers described a tense and emotional scene as the ship paused its journey to focus entirely on the rescue mission.
“Overnight and into the early morning hours, the ship remained engaged in search and rescue efforts… working closely with maritime authorities,” a letter to passengers read. “Situations such as these are never easy, and the safety and well-being of those at sea remain at the heart of every decision we make.”
The ship eventually resumed its journey and arrived at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal just before noon, though delays pushed back boarding for the next group of passengers.
For those onboard, the experience was deeply unsettling.
“It’s very heartbreaking,” said one passenger, who recalled being jolted awake by bright lights and loud noises as the search unfolded in the early morning hours.
The identity of the crew member has not been released, and it remains unclear what caused the fall.
He is now swimming in Heavenly Waters.
