A devastating tragedy has rocked the football community after former NFL defensive back Chris Payton-Jones was killed in a car crash in Florida—just weeks after welcoming his newborn daughter.

The 30-year-old former cornerback died in Gainesville when his sedan collided with a pickup truck, according to local reports. What makes the loss even more heartbreaking is the timing: Payton-Jones had just become a father again only three weeks before the fatal crash.

His sister, Clotea Jones, shared the painful reality of the family’s grief, revealing how excited he had been about this new chapter in his life.

“I’m devastated. I’m hurt. My brother is gone. I cannot even cope with the pain,” she said. “He was excited about where he was in life… and the birth of his daughter. He was just excited about being a father.”

Payton-Jones leaves behind not only his newborn baby girl, but also a young son, who he had previously said was 7 years old.

Authorities say the crash occurred when Payton-Jones was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road before colliding with a pickup truck. Three people inside the truck survived with minor injuries. Officials have not released further details about what may have led to the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Payton-Jones carved out a career in professional football after going undrafted out of Nebraska in 2018. He went on to appear in 29 regular-season NFL games, spending time with teams including the Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, and Arizona Cardinals.

After stepping away from the game earlier this year, he shifted his focus to mentoring and media work. He launched his Flashflix YouTube channel and became a familiar face on high school football sidelines, helping guide young athletes and aspiring videographers trying to break into the sport.

Those who knew him say that role meant everything to him.

His former coach with the St. Louis Battlehawks, Anthony Becht, spoke emotionally about the loss, remembering Payton-Jones as more than just a player.

“Chris was an outstanding player, a fantastic teammate and an incredible human being. Chris was a joy to coach and be around,” Becht said. “The world lost a good one.”

Meanwhile, his sister has been pouring her grief out on social media, sharing photos of the two and posting emotional tributes that capture just how sudden and unbearable the loss feels.

“This is unbearable… What is your little sis supposed to do? How am I supposed to live with knowing I’ll never see your face or get a hug?” she wrote.
