Tennis fans were left stunned after one of the most explosive on-court meltdowns in recent memory unfolded during a lower-tier event in Italy—and it ended with the match effectively handed away.

American player Tristan Boyer completely unraveled during his match against little-known Italian teenager Daniele Rapagnetta at the Francavilla al Mare Open on Monday.

Heading into the match, Boyer was the heavy favorite against Rapagnetta, who came in ranked No. 938 in the world. But things took a dramatic turn late in the second set when the Italian pulled ahead 6-5 and stepped up to serve for the match.

That’s when everything fell apart.

Boyer, clearly frustrated, began smashing his racquet repeatedly on the court. After being issued a warning, things only got worse. Officials hit him with a code violation for racquet abuse—and then escalated the penalty by docking him an entire game.

That decision effectively ended the match on the spot, handing Rapagnetta a shocking 6-4, 7-5 victory in the second round of qualifying.

But Boyer wasn’t finished.

The 25-year-old erupted into a furious tirade at the umpire, unleashing a stream of profanity as the stunned crowd looked on.

“You’re going to give me something that never even happened… That’s unbelievable,” he shouted, before continuing his rant and demanding officials review the video.

Moments later, he took out his anger on more equipment—smashing another racquet against the umpire’s chair, then hacking it against the court and fence as boos rained down from spectators.

Even as the match was over, the meltdown continued. Boyer eventually stormed off the court, slamming the gate behind him in a dramatic exit that capped off the chaotic scene.

Boyer, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 106 in September 2025, is no stranger to emotional outbursts. During the 2025 San Diego Open, he was also penalized after yelling at an umpire and smashing a racquet over a time violation.

Now, this latest incident could bring serious consequences. While no official sanctions have been announced yet, disciplinary action from tennis authorities is widely expected.

As for Rapagnetta, the underdog walked away with a huge upset win—but it’s the meltdown on the other side of the net that everyone is talking about.
