Legendary music executive Clive Davis has been hospitalized in New York City after suffering from an upper respiratory infection.
A spokesperson for the 94-year-old music mogul told TMZ that Davis was admitted to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution.”
The rep said Davis is expected to be released within 24 hours.
Davis is one of the most influential figures in modern music history. Over his decades-long career, he helped shape the careers of some of the biggest names in the industry, including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Kelly Clarkson and many more.
His hospitalization comes just days after he was seen attending the Gordon Parks Foundation Awards Dinner and Auction in New York City.
Davis has dealt with health concerns before. In February 2021, he was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, a temporary condition that can cause facial paralysis. At the time, he postponed the second half of his famous annual pre-Grammys party.
His representative said then that he was being treated with antibiotics and steroids and was expected to recover within six to eight weeks.
Davis has been a towering figure in the music business since the 1960s. He entered the industry early in that decade and became president of Columbia Records in 1967 at just 35 years old.
He later went on to help build and lead major labels and was involved in countless career-defining moments for artists across generations.
Davis also founded Bad Boy Records with Sean “Diddy” Combs, helping launch one of the most recognizable labels in hip-hop and R&B history.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone about the documentary The Soundtrack of Our Lives, which chronicled his more than 50-year career, Davis described just how deeply music has shaped his life.
“I’m immersed in it,” he said. “I think music is the universal language.”
Davis has won five Grammy Awards during his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 2000.
For now, his team says the hospital stay is precautionary and that the music legend is expected to be released soon.
