Former NFL linebacker and pro-bowler Keith Mitchell has died at the age of 51.
News of Mitchell’s death was announced Thursday, though details surrounding the cause have not been released.
Mitchell first made a name for himself as a standout linebacker at Texas A&M, where he earned All-American honors in 1996.
His sack total during his college career placed him among the program’s all-time leaders.
Despite his success, Mitchell went undrafted in 1997 amid concerns about his size. He later signed with the New Orleans Saints and remained with the team through 2001.
Mitchell’s strong play earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 2000.
Over the course of his NFL career, he recorded 286 solo tackles, 19.5 sacks and four interceptions while playing for the Saints, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.
His football career came to a sudden end after he suffered a serious spinal injury during a game in 2003.
The injury not only forced him out of the NFL but also threatened his ability to walk. Mitchell eventually overcame the devastating setback and later devoted his life to health, wellness and mindfulness.
After retiring from football, he became deeply involved in yoga and meditation, which he credited with saving his life.
Mitchell traveled around the world sharing his knowledge and helping others through wellness programs and public appearances.
Late last year, he released a book titled The Mindfulness Mastery Playbook.
KBTX was the first outlet to report his death.
