A male cast member from Married at First Sight U.K. has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of rape as police continue investigating serious allegations connected to the reality show.
BBC News reported on Thursday, July 2, that officers with London’s Metropolitan Police arrested a man in his 30s on June 18.
Police said the arrest was made as part of an “ongoing investigation being led by the Met Police.”
The identity of the man has not been released, and authorities have also not publicly identified the alleged victim or victims.
The arrest comes just weeks after a BBC investigation revealed disturbing allegations from three former female contestants on the hit reality series.
Two women alleged they were raped by the men they were paired with and married to during filming. A third woman claimed she was subjected to a non-consensual sexual act.
The allegations sent shockwaves through the show and prompted Channel 4 to remove every season of Married at First Sight U.K. from its streaming platforms.
The women told the BBC that they did not feel properly protected by the program after reporting their allegations to CPL Productions, the independent company behind the series.
CPL has said it followed appropriate welfare procedures in each case.
Channel 4 announced in April that it had launched an independent review into welfare concerns surrounding the show after receiving what it described as serious allegations involving a small number of former participants.
The network said those accused had denied the allegations.
The findings of the review are expected to be released in the coming months.
“I want to express my sympathy to contributors who have clearly been distressed after taking part in Married at First Sight U.K.,” Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra previously said.
“The wellbeing of our contributors is always of paramount importance.”
Representatives for Channel 4 and CPL Productions have been contacted for comment following news of the arrest.
Married at First Sight U.K. follows single men and women who are matched by relationship experts and meet for the first time at the altar.
The newlyweds then go on a honeymoon, move in together and eventually decide whether to remain married or get divorced.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been announced.
