A 5-year-old boy was left fighting for his life Sunday evening after falling from a fourth-floor window of a Bronx apartment building and landing on the sidewalk below, police said.
The terrifying incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Buchanan Place near Davidson Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood.
Police said the little boy, who was wearing only a diaper, fell from a fourth-floor window and suffered injuries consistent with a fall from a significant height.
Video recorded moments after the incident shows the child on the sidewalk as stunned neighbors and pedestrians gather around him.
In the footage, the boy appears to be kneeling motionless with his head down and his arms stretched out in front of him.
Witnesses could be heard reacting in shock.
“Wow, a boy just fell out the window!” one person said.
Another onlooker could be heard demanding to know where the child’s parents were.
Two police officers eventually moved the boy onto his side as people nearby watched anxiously.
Tone Rodriguez told WCBS that he and several other people were standing outside when they suddenly heard a loud thud.
Rodriguez said the boy had visible injuries to his face.
“His face was all swollen on this side,” he said. “You can tell he got hit bad. We were trying to figure out where he came from.”
Emergency crews rushed the child to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
He was listed in critical but stable condition following the fall.
Police have not announced any arrests, and investigators said there was no immediate indication of criminal activity.
Authorities have not released additional details about how the boy managed to fall from the apartment window.
