Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker and Super Bowl champion Todd Shell has died at 64, leaving behind a legacy that stretched from college football stardom to an NFL championship and a successful coaching career.

Shell died Sunday, November 1, according to his family and former teammates. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

The 49ers confirmed his passing in an emotional statement, saying the organization mourned the loss of its former linebacker and Super Bowl XIX champion while extending condolences to his wife, Kelli, and the entire Shell family.

A first-round selection in the 1984 NFL Draft, Shell joined San Francisco after a standout college career at Brigham Young University. He quickly made an impression, recording two sacks and three interceptions during his rookie season, including one returned for a touchdown.

That same season, Shell helped the 49ers capture Super Bowl XIX with a commanding 38-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins, earning a championship ring in his first year in the league.

He went on to play 38 regular-season games for San Francisco between 1984 and 1987, finishing with seven sacks and five interceptions. Injuries ultimately shortened his playing career, but Shell remained involved in football, later coaching in the Arena Football League and earning Coach of the Year honors in 2003.

His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from former teammates and friends, including Tom Holmoe, who had known Shell since their college days at BYU.

“My dear friend, Coug & SF 49er teammate Todd Shell passed away Sunday night,” Holmoe wrote on X, recalling their friendship that began in 1979.

Holmoe remembered Shell as one of BYU’s greatest defensive players and praised his loyalty, humor and unforgettable storytelling.

Shell was also a beloved figure in his hometown of Mesa, Arizona, where he helped Mountain View High School win a state football championship in 1978. The school’s football program announced plans to honor him following his death.

The loss comes during an especially difficult period for the Shell family. His son, Tanner Shell, a former Arizona State basketball player, died in June 2025 at age 44.

Shell is survived by his wife, Kelli, daughter Krystal, grandchildren and other family members.

Although injuries cut his NFL career short, Shell’s impact on the game continued long after his final appearance in a 49ers uniform, and he will be remembered by teammates, players and fans who followed his remarkable football journey.
