Guitar legend Carlos Santana is recovering after he collapsed on stage during a concert near Detroit on Tuesday night.
The 74-year-old musician was performing at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, when he collapsed.
Photos and video posted to social media showed medics treating Santana on stage. He appeared to wave to the audience as he was wheeled away, which elicited cheers from those who remained at the venue.
Santana’s manager Michael Vrionis told CBS News in a statement that Santana had suffered “heat exhaustion and dehydration.”
He was taken to a nearby hospital for observation, where he was “doing well,” the statement read.
Santana’s Wednesday evening show in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, has been postponed, Vrionis said.
Santana is currently on his Miraculous Supernatural tour.
Carlos Santana is reportedly “doing well” one day after collapsing on stage during a concert in the Detroit area.
“Rock Legend Carlos Santana was over-taken by heat exhaustion and dehydration during a concert Tuesday (July 5) evening in Michigan,” a post on the longtime Bay Area music star’s Facebook page read. “The guitar great was taken from his show at Pine Knob Music Theatre (formerly DTE Energy Music Theatre), an outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston, some 40 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan. Carlos was taken to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation and is doing well, it was announced by Santana’s manager Michael Vrionis tonight.”
The 74-year-old Woodstock veteran collapsed at around 10 p.m. and was treated by on stage by medical personal, who “asked fans in attendance to pray for Santana, who is receiving serious medical attention.” according to NBC’s Detroit-based news affiliate WDIV-TV.
It was unclear at the time what was ailing the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, known for such late ’60s/early ’70s classic rock favorites as “Oye Como Va” and “Evil Ways,” as well for the 1999 blockbuster “Supernatural.” Yet, both Santana and wife Cindy Blackman Santana have now posted online about the situation, confirming that heat and lack of water/food were the culprits.
“To one and all — thank you for your precious prayers,” Carlos Santana posted on Facebook. “Cindy and I we are good just taking it easy. Forgot to eat and drink water, so I (was) dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and miracles to you all.”
Cindy Blackman Santana also commented about how much the reaction from fans meant to the couple.
“Hi Everyone! Carlos & I thank you so much for your prayers, love, care & concern for him!” she posted. “Please know that he’s resting and doing very well! He was diagnosed with heat exhaustion & dehydration… it was 100 degrees on stage and 114 under the lights so that coupled with not enough water is what caused the issue. He’ll be as good as new soon! Thank you again and we love you! Cindy & Carlos.”
Santana was on the road with co-headliners Earth, Wind & Fire as part of the Miraculous Supernatural Tour.
The incredibly popular trek played two dates in the Bay Area — at Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View and Concord Pavilion — in June.
