A bus driver contracted to transport the Pittsburgh Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee for their upcoming series with the Brewers was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.
The incident occurred late Thursday night when Illinois State Police observed erratic driving and eventually stopped the bus on Interstate 94 in Chicago. Although the driver is not an employee of the Pirates, the team expressed concern about the situation and confirmed that all personnel arrived safely in Milwaukee.
The Arrest and Police Observations:
Illinois State Police were tasked with escorting the Pittsburgh Pirates’ bus from Chicago to Milwaukee. However, the driver deviated from the planned route, moving away from the officers. Troopers noticed erratic driving behavior and decided to intervene.
Eventually, the bus was pulled over on the right shoulder of Interstate 94 in Chicago. The driver was promptly arrested after exhibiting “multiple signs of impairment,” according to the police.
Concerns Raised by the Pittsburgh Pirates:
In response to the incident, Brian Warecki, Pirates’ senior vice president of communications, expressed deep concern about the arrest.
While emphasizing the safe arrival of all personnel in Milwaukee, Warecki acknowledged that the bus service used by the team is contracted from a local provider. The organization is currently in communication with the relevant parties to address the matter appropriately.
Safety and Contracted Transportation:
The Pittsburgh Pirates, like many sports teams, rely on contracted transportation services to facilitate travel between cities. In this instance, the bus driver involved was not a direct employee of the team but had been contracted to drive them to Milwaukee after the completion of their series with the Chicago Cubs.
The incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and reliability of contracted services, especially when it comes to transportation of professional sports teams.
Ongoing Investigations and Future Measures:
Following the arrest, Illinois State Police will likely conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, including determining the extent of the driver’s impairment and any potential risks posed to the team and other road users.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will also cooperate with the appropriate authorities and the contracted transportation provider to address the matter and ensure future travel arrangements prioritize safety and professionalism.
