An 8-year-old New York boy was struck and killed by a school bus as he was walking home from his yeshiva in Rockland County on Monday evening, police said.
The boy, who was identified in local reports as Mordechai Pinchos Spitzer, stepped in front of the school bus as it was taking students home around 6 p.m. in the village of New Square, according to the Ramapo Police Department.
The boy died on the spot from his injuries.
His father, Rabbi Yakov Yosef Spitzer, is the principal of the Skver girls’ school, reported the Yeshiva World news site.
The area around the Jewish religious school in the 100 block of Clinton Lane remained off limits for hours as cops collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
“It can be traumatic for the officers who respond, but we do have a wellness team to support officers who are here if they need anything, and often they will do a debrief after the fact, and that will probably be the case in this situation because it was a young child,” Ramapo police Lt. Blaine Howell told News 12 Hudson Valley.
The Ramapo Police Department’s accident reconstruction team is working on the case to determine what happened.
