The Texas Rangers will be without one of their veteran relievers for an extended period of time.
Left-hander Brock Burke was placed on the injured list this Saturday. The 27-year-old fractured his non-throwing hand while punching a wall.
Burke was apparently frustrated after allowing four runs on three hits against the Houston Astros on Friday night.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy spoke to reporters about Burke’s injury. He pretty much said what everyone else was thinking.
“We want our guys, our athletes to be competitive and hate to lose, but with that passion there’s a fine edge, and when you cross that line, there’s going to be consequences,” Bochy said, via ESPN. “And we just saw what happened there. You love the fact that he was upset with not helping the club last night … but it just wasn’t a smart move.”
Bochy said he plans on chatting with Burke about his actions.
“Sometimes you don’t have time to think about what the consequences may be,” the four-time World Series champion continued. “You’re just that upset and that frustrated. That’s the passion to do well [and] hate to lose. It’s not the first time I’ve seen it.”
Burke has appeared in five games this season. He has already given up five runs in just three innings of work.
Since the Rangers won’t have Burke for a while, they’ve called up right-hander Austin Pruitt from Triple-A Round Rock.
