The Today show family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Uche Ojeh, the husband of longtime co-host Sheinelle Jones, who passed away at age 45 following a brave fight against glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The emotional news was delivered by co-anchor Savannah Guthrie during Friday’s broadcast. Fighting back tears, Guthrie shared the announcement with viewers, describing Ojeh as “an incredible person” and “the perfect partner” to Jones.
“We talk a lot about how this place is like a family,” Guthrie said solemnly. “This morning, we have some heartbreaking news about someone very dear to us.”
Ojeh’s illness had been kept private, with Jones stepping back from her hosting duties in mid-December. At the time, she posted a message to fans explaining she needed “time to deal with a family health matter,” but didn’t disclose specifics.
“I sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I’ve been absent from the show,” she wrote on Instagram. “Your kindness means so much to me.”
Uchechukwuka Adenola Ojeh, known simply as Uche, first met Jones when she was a high school senior visiting Northwestern University. He was a freshman giving campus tours. Their love story began there, and they married in 2007 on that very campus. They were together for 18 years and raised three children: 15-year-old son Kaylin, and 12-year-old twins Clara and Uche.
Fellow Today host Craig Melvin, a close friend, paid tribute to Ojeh’s devotion as a father. “He loved those kids more than anything else in this world and was just so proud,” Melvin said. “He was that dad on the sidelines of every soccer game, every concert, every recital. He was that guy.”
Melvin also described Ojeh as a “private guy” with a sharp, dry sense of humor. “He would say things that caught you off guard. He wasn’t braggadocious. He was humble.”
Friday’s episode included a touching video tribute narrated by Guthrie, celebrating Ojeh’s life and character. “He was her perfect match,” she said. “A man whose joyful spirit and quiet strength complemented Sheinelle in every way.”
The tribute highlighted Ojeh’s passion for soccer, his love of singing in his church choir, and his deep commitment to his Nigerian heritage—something he proudly passed on to his children.
“Family, friends, and his abiding faith were always his true north,” Guthrie added. “Today, with heavy hearts, we celebrate his life: devoted husband, loving father, and a man whose generosity of spirit touched all who knew him.”
