Helen Siff, a beloved character actress known for her roles in Will & Grace and Modern Family, has passed away at the age of 88. Her family confirmed that she died on Thursday, December 18, in Los Angeles due to complications from surgery following a prolonged illness.
Siff’s family described her as not just a talented performer but someone who brought professionalism, kindness, and dedication to every project. “She understood that every role, no matter how large or small, was an opportunity to contribute something meaningful to the story being told,” they said in a statement.
Born in Woodmere, New York, Siff’s career spanned over five decades, with more than 70 TV and film roles. Some of her early appearances included playing a waitress on Lou Grant in 1981, a cashier in The Karate Kid (1984), and a nurse on Silver Spoons (1986). She also appeared in Big Top Pee-Wee (1988) and as a clerk on Doogie Howser, M.D. in 1989.
Throughout her career, Siff made memorable guest appearances in numerous popular shows, including Married… with Children, Will & Grace, Ellen, Scrubs, Modern Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Spin City. She was also seen in films such as You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (2008) and Hail, Caesar! (2016).
Siff was also a seasoned stage actress, having originated the role of Helga in Grandma Sylvia’s Funeral in 1993, as well as appearing in Lilies of the Field and Lost in Yonkers.
Her daughter, Victoria Russell, paid tribute to her on Instagram, calling her “dynamic, charismatic, and one-of-a-kind.” She added that while Siff “loved her craft deeply,” her greatest role was being a mother and grandmother.
Siff is survived by her identical twin sister, Carol Infield Sender, her children Matt, Susie, Karen, Victoria, and Jenny, as well as her grandchildren Chelsea, Zach, Robert, Josh, Spencer, Megan, and Dean. Her husband, Marshall, passed away in 2007, and her son, Bruce, died in 1999.
