A Michigan father is being hailed as a hero after running back into his burning home when he realized his young daughter was still trapped inside — a split-second decision that saved her life but left them both badly injured.
The terrifying scene unfolded early Sunday morning, Dec. 21, in the village of Middleville. Firefighters were called to the home around 8:36 a.m., according to Thornapple Township Emergency Services. Crews arrived within minutes, but the house was already engulfed and could not be saved.

Michelle Holsey told WZZM that everyone initially made it out of the home — except her fiancé’s daughter, Cali.
Holsey said she was the first to realize something was wrong and screamed that the house was on fire. Her fiancé, John Biermaker, rushed outside with the family — then noticed Cali was missing.
The young girl had been asleep upstairs.
Without hesitation, Biermaker ran straight back into the flames.
“We didn’t see Cali, so he just didn’t think twice,” Holsey said. “He just booked it up the hot stairs. He said he kept falling once he got her, kept tripping down the stairs.”
John made it out with his daughter, but the rescue came at a devastating cost.
Both father and daughter were rushed to intensive care. According to a GoFundMe created to support the family, more than half of John’s body suffered second- and third-degree burns. Cali is recovering from burns and smoke inhalation.
Doctors say John is facing a very long and painful recovery.
“Cali is better off than John,” Holsey said. “She has only 16.5% of her body burned, and she’s doing well. She’s just sleepy today, but not in pain. That’s good.”
John, however, remains in severe pain. “His face — he’s more wrapped up than she is,” Holsey added.
Holsey said fire officials later told her the blaze may have started when an animal fell into the chimney, possibly impacting the fireplace, which was in use at the time.
With their home destroyed just days before the holidays, the family is now facing homelessness — but they say they are overwhelmingly grateful that Cali is alive.
“A hero, a dad, a true man,” the GoFundMe organizer wrote. “John, you are the strongest person I know. Cali is alive because you didn’t give up. You walked through fire for your child.”
