British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was injured in a deadly highway crash in Nigeria on Monday, according to regional officials, with local reports confirming that two other people were killed in the wreck.

Authorities said the two-time world heavyweight champion was traveling in a Lexus SUV on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the vehicle was involved in a serious collision near the Sagamu interchange. Joshua, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua was involved in an accident under circumstances that are currently under investigation,” Lagos police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said in a statement. “He sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention.”

Gbenga Omotoso, a spokesperson for the Lagos state government, confirmed in a social media post that the crash was fatal and that emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collision.

Photos published by Punch Newspapers showed Joshua sitting shirtless in the back seat of the damaged vehicle, surrounded by shattered glass. He appeared conscious and alert, with no obvious serious injuries visible in the images. The outlet reported that the SUV collided with a truck, resulting in the deaths of two people.

The crash comes just over a week after Joshua made headlines in the U.S. with a high-profile knockout victory over Jake Paul in a non-title bout in Miami.

Joshua, who was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, frequently travels to Nigeria and has spoken publicly about his strong ties to the country. Officials said the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
