Gavin McKenna’s rapid climb toward NHL stardom has taken a stunning detour — and it has nothing to do with what’s happening on the ice.
The 18-year-old hockey standout, widely projected as a potential No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, is now facing serious legal trouble after police say he was involved in a late-night fight near campus over the weekend.
According to court records filed Wednesday, Gavin McKenna has been charged with aggravated assault, along with misdemeanor assault and several lesser offenses. The aggravated assault charge alleges an attempt to cause serious bodily injury or acting with extreme indifference to human life.
The charges were filed Saturday — the same day McKenna suited up for Penn State Nittany Lions men’s hockey in a historic first-ever game played at Beaver Stadium. McKenna even scored a goal in the game, which ended in a 5–4 overtime loss.
But just hours later, the focus shifted dramatically.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the alleged victim spoke with police from an emergency room on January 31 while being treated for fractures on both sides of his jaw. Doctors reportedly told police the injuries would require surgery.
Officers noted the man’s face was visibly swollen, with dried blood on his lips. When he attempted to speak, police said a tooth was missing from his mouth.
Because of his condition, the alleged victim was unable to give a full account of what happened. However, friends who were with him told officers that McKenna punched the man twice on the right side of his face following a verbal exchange.
Police say surveillance footage reviewed as part of the investigation appears to show McKenna throwing two punches at the man’s face, causing him to stumble backward.
The affidavit states the alleged victim later underwent surgery to repair the fractures and had his jaw wired shut for two weeks.
McKenna’s case is now awaiting a preliminary hearing.
The legal trouble comes at a critical moment for the young star, who has been lighting up the hockey world and climbing draft boards at a rapid pace. With the spotlight of the NHL Draft growing brighter and scouts watching closely, McKenna’s future may now depend as much on what happens in court as on what he does between the boards.
