After nearly 60 years with the legendary Beach Boys, longtime member Bruce Johnston is stepping away from the band’s touring lineup.

Johnston, 83, first joined the group’s touring band in 1965 and went on to perform in more than 6,000 concerts over the decades. Now, he says it’s time to shift his focus back to another passion — songwriting.

“It’s time for part three of my lengthy musical career,” Johnston told Rolling Stone while announcing the news. “I can write songs forever, and wait until you hear what’s coming. As my major talent beyond singing is songwriting, now is the time to get serious again.”

In addition to writing music, Johnston says he also plans to begin doing speaking engagements. He joked that audiences might still hear a few of his famous songs during those appearances.

“I might even sing ‘Disney Girls’ and ‘I Write the Songs,’” he said, referring to two of his best-known compositions.

While Johnston is stepping away from regular touring, he made it clear that he isn’t completely saying goodbye to the Beach Boys. The singer said he still plans to reunite with the band for special events and celebrations.

“I am excited to join the Beach Boys for performances on special occasions and will see everyone at the Hollywood Bowl as we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday,” Johnston said. “This isn’t goodbye, it’s see you soon. I am forever grateful to be a part of the Beach Boys musical legacy.”

With Johnston stepping back, Mike Love will remain the only member from the band’s classic era still actively performing with the group.

Love voiced his support for Johnston’s decision.

“I am very supportive of Bruce,” he said.
