According to ESPN, Vanderbilt suffered a “full dislocation” of his right pinkie finger during the play.
The injury was reportedly so severe that the bone actually broke through the skin, requiring stitches after the game.
Despite the painful injury, Vanderbilt initially attempted to stay in the game before eventually heading to the locker room for medical treatment.
The defensive specialist has become a key part of the Lakers’ playoff rotation thanks to his physical defense, energy, rebounding, and ability to guard multiple positions.
While Vanderbilt is not one of the team’s top scorers, his hustle and defensive presence have made him a valuable piece for Los Angeles, especially in high-intensity playoff matchups.
As of now, the Lakers have not announced how long Vanderbilt could be sidelined.
There is also no official timetable for his return, though injuries involving dislocations and exposed bone can sometimes require extended recovery time depending on the severity.
The injury comes at a brutal time for the Lakers as they battle the Thunder in what is expected to be a highly physical playoff series.
Fans online quickly reacted to the ugly moment, with many calling it one of the nastiest finger injuries they’ve seen this postseason.
The Lakers are expected to provide additional updates on Vanderbilt’s condition in the coming days.
