Beloved comedy legend Catherine O’Hara spent decades making audiences laugh on screen, but behind the scenes she was quietly living with a rare and little-known medical condition.

The Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek star died on Jan. 30 at the age of 71, and reports now reveal that O’Hara had long been living with a congenital condition known as dextrocardia with situs inversus — an extremely rare disorder in which the heart sits on the right side of the chest instead of the left, and other internal organs are reversed in a mirror-image position.

Sources say O’Hara first learned about the condition more than 20 years ago during what was supposed to be a routine medical appointment. According to a past interview, she had gone to the doctor for tuberculosis testing before one of her sons started nursery school. During the visit, doctors performed additional tests, including an EKG and chest X-ray — and discovered something unusual.

O’Hara later recalled how surprised the physician was when the results came back.

“He calls us into his office and says, ‘You’re the first one I’ve met,’” she said, describing the doctor’s reaction after realizing her organs were reversed.

Despite the startling discovery, O’Hara chose not to dwell on the diagnosis. She admitted she never even bothered to fully memorize the complicated medical name of the condition because she preferred not to focus on it.

“I kind of don’t want to know,” she once said about the diagnosis, explaining that she had lived most of her life without realizing anything was different.

Her husband, production designer Bo Welch, even tried to lighten the mood when the doctor explained the unusual finding. According to O’Hara, he jokingly told the doctor, “No, her head’s on backwards.”

Medical experts say dextrocardia with situs inversus is extremely rare. While many people with the condition can live normal lives, it is sometimes linked to other heart and lung complications.

It remains unclear whether the condition played any role in O’Hara’s death following a brief illness.

Throughout her career, O’Hara became one of comedy’s most beloved performers. She was widely known for her role as Kate McCallister, the frantic but loving mother in the Home Alone films, and later earned widespread praise for her Emmy-winning performance as Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek.

After news of her passing broke, tributes poured in from fans and colleagues who remembered her talent, humor, and warmth.

Among the most emotional messages came from Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, who played her on-screen son in the holiday classic.

“Mama. I thought we had time,” Culkin wrote in a heartfelt tribute. “I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

O’Hara is survived by her husband Bo Welch and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.
