Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.

The actor passed away on March 20, with his family confirming the news and revealing he died in his sleep from natural causes.

“We are heartbroken,” his family said in a statement. “He was a passionate, sensitive person who was endlessly driven to create.”

While many fans remember Brendon for his iconic role on Buffy, those closest to him say he had recently found a deep love for painting and art, often sharing his work with friends, family, and supporters.

They also acknowledged that Brendon had faced personal struggles over the years, but said he had been actively working on his health and was feeling optimistic about the future.

“He was in treatment and managing his diagnosis,” the family shared.

Brendon had dealt with several serious health issues in recent years. In 2022, he was hospitalized after a cardiac incident and later revealed he had a congenital heart defect. He also spoke openly about suffering a heart attack and undergoing multiple spinal surgeries tied to a condition affecting the nerves in his lower spine.

Despite those challenges, he remained connected to fans and often reflected on how much his time on Buffy meant to him.

“I’ll always be grateful I got to play Xander,” he once shared, marking the show’s anniversary.

Brendon appeared in all seven seasons of the hit series from 1997 to 2003, becoming a fan favorite for his humor and heart. He later went on to appear in shows like Criminal Minds and Private Practice, along with several film roles.

His life wasn’t without turbulence. He was open about past struggles with substance abuse and mental health, which at times led to legal trouble. But those who knew him say he continued trying to move forward and express himself through his art.

His family is now asking for privacy as they grieve, while thanking fans for the outpouring of love and support.

For many, Brendon will always be remembered as the witty, loyal Xander—but also as someone who lived life with intensity, creativity, and heart.
