Actress Amanda Peet is opening up about one of the most difficult chapters of her life—and it all happened at once.
In a deeply personal essay, the 54-year-old actress shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer while both of her parents were in hospice care.
What started as a routine medical appointment quickly turned into something far more serious.
Peet said she went in for a scan just before Labor Day, expecting everything to be normal. But doctors flagged something concerning and ordered a biopsy.
“That’s when I knew,” she wrote.
The diagnosis didn’t come all at once. Instead, she described it as a “slow drip,” with doctors gradually determining how serious the cancer was.
At the same time, her personal life was unraveling.
Both of her parents were in hospice, and Peet was forced to navigate her own health crisis while preparing to lose them. In an incredibly difficult decision, she chose not to tell her mother about her cancer diagnosis—or even about her father’s death—because her mother was in the final stages of Parkinson’s disease.
Eventually, Peet received some hopeful news.
Her doctors determined the cancer was treatable. She underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation, and was able to avoid chemotherapy.
Weeks after receiving a clear scan in January, her mother passed away.
