What was supposed to be a dream family vacation turned into an unthinkable nightmare for one Missouri family.
Kasey Grelle, a 41-year-old mom of three and successful businesswoman, was killed in a horrific accident while vacationing at a luxury resort in Nicaragua—an incident that also left her 11-year-old son fighting for his life.
According to reports and family members, the tragedy unfolded on the morning of March 23 at Rancho Santana resort in Tola. Kasey and her children were part of a resort-organized tour, riding in a vehicle with roughly two dozen other tourists, when it suddenly lost control while going down a hill.
The vehicle rolled.
The crash was devastating.
Kasey suffered multiple severe injuries, including skull fractures, and died as a result. More than 20 others were hurt in the accident, including another American teen who reportedly lost an arm.
But for Kasey’s family, the nightmare didn’t end there.
Her son Julian, 11, was critically injured in the crash and had to be airlifted back to the United States. He is now being treated at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where he remains in intensive care with serious injuries, including head trauma, spinal fractures, and a collapsed lung.
Despite everything, those close to him say his spirit hasn’t been broken.
From his hospital bed, Julian has been cracking jokes, watching St. Louis Cardinals games, and even keeping up with his March Madness bracket—showing the same strength his family says he got from his mom.
Back home, the rest of the family is trying to cope with the sudden loss.
Kasey’s husband, Dave, is now holding things together for their younger children, Kit, 9, and Desare, 6, who have been making bracelets and drawings for their older brother as they try to process the tragedy.
Loved ones say Kasey was the heart of the family—a driven entrepreneur who built an international marketing company, but whose proudest role was being a mom.
“She was one of the most brilliant, driven, and selfless people I have ever met,” her brother said in a tribute, remembering her as someone who always put others first.
In fact, this wasn’t the first time Kasey had carried her family through crisis. Years ago, when her husband was nearly killed in a separate accident, she stayed by his side while pregnant, later becoming the family’s primary provider as he recovered.
Now, the family she once held together is left to navigate life without her.
A GoFundMe has been launched to help cover medical bills, funeral costs, and ongoing expenses as Julian faces a long road to recovery and the family begins to rebuild after an unimaginable loss.
