A shocking tragedy unfolded in Texas after a popular Brazilian influencer vanished mid-race during one of the most grueling endurance events in the world.

Mara Flávia, 38, disappeared beneath the water during the opening swim of Ironman Texas on Saturday morning, sparking panic among fellow competitors and a massive emergency response.

The race had just kicked off in Lake Woodlands when swimmers suddenly realized something was wrong. Witnesses said Flávia went under in front of others and never came back up. Calls for help began pouring in shortly after 6 a.m., with officials later confirming they were alerted to a “lost swimmer” around 7:30 a.m.

What followed was a desperate and emotional search.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene, diving into the lake as the competition continued around them — making an already difficult situation even more chaotic. Fire Chief Palmer Buck said divers were working in near impossible conditions, dealing with “zero” visibility as they searched the water.

After nearly three hours, Flávia was finally located just after 9:30 a.m. Officials said her body had sunk about 10 feet below the surface. She was pulled from the lake and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later confirmed she drowned during the swim portion of the race. An investigation is ongoing.

One volunteer who witnessed the moment described it as something he will never forget.

Shawn McDonald said swimmers near him all pointed to the same spot, saying she had gone under right in front of them. He recalled the panic on their faces and the haunting silence that followed.

In a heartbreaking account, McDonald said he dove into the water again and again, refusing to give up hope.

“I lost count of how many times I went under,” he shared. “I just kept thinking I would find her and bring her back up.”

At one point, he said he felt her body — but it was already too late.

The emotional toll of the moment clearly hasn’t left him. Reflecting on the tragedy, he said he never once thought she might already be gone. He believed until the very end that he could save her.

Flávia, who had built a following of more than 60,000 fans on social media, was remembered as a determined athlete who showed up ready to take on one of the toughest races out there.
