The golf world is mourning the loss of one of its most recognizable personalities. Legendary golfer Jim Colbert, known just as much for his iconic bucket hat as his success on the course, died Sunday at the age of 85 from an undisclosed cause.
Colbert built a remarkable career that stretched across decades, becoming a fan favorite thanks to both his talent and his unforgettable look. The New Jersey native earned eight PGA Tour victories and later added an incredible 20 wins on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, cementing his place as one of golf’s most respected veterans.
While many golfers became known for signature swings or intense rivalries, Colbert became instantly recognizable for the bucket hat he wore during competitions throughout his career.
“Lee Trevino has his sombrero, Jack Nicklaus has the bear. I have my hat,” Colbert once joked about the accessory that became his trademark.
Long before he became a golf star, Colbert actually started out as a football player during college. But once he focused on golf, it quickly became obvious he had a special talent. In 1964, he finished runner-up in the NCAA Championship, setting the stage for a successful professional career.
Five years later, Colbert captured his first PGA Tour victory at the 1969 Monsanto Open. He continued climbing the ranks throughout the 1970s, tying for fourth place at the Masters and finishing fifth at the U.S. Open in 1974.
One of the biggest years of his career came in 1983, when he won twice on the PGA Tour and finished 15th on the money list.
But Colbert’s story became even more inspiring in the 1990s.
After being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing surgery to have his prostate removed, Colbert made an incredible comeback. Just two years later, he won the Transamerica tournament in 1996, proving his determination and resilience both on and off the golf course.
Outside of golf, Colbert was also a hugely successful businessman. In 1980, he launched a company that eventually owned 23 golf courses and employed roughly 700 people. At its peak, the business reportedly generated an impressive $50 million in annual gross revenue.
