An Australian rock singer has been forced to cancel his tour after a terrifying onstage fall left him with a fractured back.
Phil Jamieson, the former frontman of Australian rock band Grinspoon, revealed that he was injured while performing on Friday, Aug. 7.
The 49-year-old singer told fans in an Instagram post that he slipped onstage and slammed his spine into the drum riser, bringing the concert to an abrupt end.
Jamieson was taken by ambulance to Latrobe Hospital in Victoria, where he spent hours undergoing tests.
“I spent most of Friday in emergency getting different tests etc and by 4am I was confirmed to have fractured my L1 (lower back guy), with a prescription of bed rest and a long road to recovery,” he wrote.
The painful injury means Jamieson will no longer be able to continue his planned Australian tour.
“This means, sigh, that the tour is cancelled :(,” he told fans, adding that venues and ticketing agencies would be contacting ticket holders about refunds.
Jamieson made it clear that he was devastated to call off the shows.
“No-one is more bummed about this than me, but I can’t stand up let alone play a gig at the moment,” he said.
The singer shared several photos from the hospital, including an image of himself lying in a hospital bed and an X-ray showing his injured spine.
The accident has also forced Jamieson to cancel the launch party for his new album, 10Charlie, which was scheduled to be released on Aug. 14.
Despite the painful setback, he encouraged fans to still give the record a listen.
“If you feel like wrapping your earholes around it, I would be grateful. Lots of work went into it and I love it,” Jamieson wrote.
Fans quickly flooded the comments with messages of support.
“Oh man, so sorry to hear this. My best to you Phil, rest up ♥️,” one person wrote.
Another added, “Mate, that is hectic. Sending you well wishes and speedy recovery.”
A third fan told him, “Rest up and recover well. You will be rocking out on stage again soon 🤘.”
Jamieson thanked everyone who reached out, saying he appreciated the well-wishes and offers of help.
He also praised the staff at Latrobe Hospital for what he described as “elite” care, specifically thanking his paramedics Renae and James and his discharge nurse Andrew.
“I hope to see you all soon. Love, PJ in my pjs for the foreseeable future x,” he joked.
Jamieson had been scheduled to perform across Australia through Sept. 1, but his official website now shows no upcoming tour dates as he begins what he described as a long recovery.
