A 22-year-old passenger died after suffering a medical emergency aboard a Southwest Airlines flight traveling from Dallas to Los Angeles, authorities said.
Southwest Flight 958 was headed to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday morning when passenger Rain McMillan Walmsey suddenly became unresponsive, according to law enforcement sources who spoke with NBC4.
As the plane remained thousands of feet in the air, passengers and crew members desperately performed CPR in an attempt to save him.
Emergency responders were waiting when the aircraft landed at LAX, but despite efforts to revive Walmsey, paramedics were unable to save him. Firefighters pronounced the 22-year-old dead at the scene.
Exactly what caused the medical emergency remains unclear.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner has identified Walmsey, but a cause of death has not yet been determined. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
Southwest Airlines confirmed that a “medical incident involving a customer” occurred aboard Flight 958 but did not release additional details about what happened or the passenger’s death.
