Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas gave fans a scare after accidentally hitting one of his own bandmates in the head with a metal microphone stand during a live performance.
The nasty onstage mishap happened as Thomas, 54, was performing in Illinois and swinging the stand around as part of his energetic routine.
Video from the concert shows the singer completely caught up in the moment, repeatedly whipping the microphone stand through the air.
What he apparently did not realize was that guitarist Paul Doucette was standing dangerously close behind him.
As Thomas swung the stand one final time, it struck Doucette in the back of the head.
The guitarist immediately appeared hurt and was forced to leave the stage.

Thomas quickly realized what had happened and addressed the crowd.
“Every night I’m over here and I’m throwing this god damn thing around,” he said.
He then acknowledged that the stand had hit Doucette hard.
“Oh, I went, it nailed him,” Thomas told the audience. “Yeah, we nailed him hard.”
The incident left fans stunned, especially because the hit appeared completely accidental and happened in the middle of an otherwise high-energy performance.
Thomas has been known for his animated stage presence, and the microphone stand routine appeared to be something he regularly incorporates into shows.
This time, however, the bit went badly wrong.
Doucette’s condition was not immediately clear from the footage, but he was able to leave the stage after the impact.
The clip quickly began circulating online, with fans reacting to the shocking moment and hoping the guitarist was okay.
For Thomas, it was a painful reminder that even a familiar stage move can go wrong in an instant.
