Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who became king at just 3 years old and was widely known as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at age 34.
The royal family of the Kingdom of Tooro announced on Aug. 27 that the king was critically ill and receiving medical treatment in the United States.
Just hours later, officials confirmed that he died around 10 p.m. that same night.
A cause of death has not yet been made public.
Rukidi IV became the 13th monarch of Tooro in 1995 following the death of his father. The Bantu kingdom was founded in the early 19th century and is now located within modern-day Uganda.
Over the years, the king became known for supporting education, youth empowerment and HIV/AIDS awareness programs.
News of his death sparked an outpouring of grief across Uganda and on social media, where mourners shared tributes including the phrase, “The lion has rested.”
His death also leaves the kingdom facing an immediate question over succession.
Before his passing, Rukidi IV had reportedly faced growing pressure from both his mother and members of the public to marry and produce a direct royal heir.
Now, with his reign ending unexpectedly, Ugandans are waiting to learn who will succeed him.
Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki urged the public to remain calm and united as the royal family mourns and prepares for the next announcement.
“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda,” he said. “May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace.”
Rukidi IV’s death brings to an end a remarkable reign that began when he was still a toddler and lasted more than three decades.
