Martha Stewart is facing another wave of criticism after offering a surprising new explanation for her controversial Halloween costume, pointing to an accident involving Today show host Craig Melvin after previously claiming her outfit was intended to raise awareness about homelessness.

The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul, whose fortune is estimated at $400 million, sparked outrage over Halloween weekend when she dressed as a homeless woman, smeared dirt-like makeup across her face and held a handwritten sign declaring, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

The costume immediately drew accusations of insensitivity, particularly because Stewart shared the photograph in an Instagram post that also promoted her QVC candle collection.

But just days after issuing two apologies, Stewart revealed that the outfit apparently came about because of an unexpected mishap on live television.

Speaking Tuesday, November 3, at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, Florida, Stewart told the audience that Melvin had accidentally spilled chocolate ganache on the sweater she planned to wear to a Halloween party.

The incident occurred during the October 30 episode of NBC’s Today, when Melvin was dressed as Stewart’s longtime friend Snoop Dogg for the morning show’s Halloween celebration.

While the pair worked on decorating a cheesecake, Melvin accidentally splattered chocolate on Stewart’s clothing.

“Real Snoop would never do that,” Stewart joked during the broadcast.

Melvin later apologized for the mess, even expressing concern that he had ruined her expensive pants.

According to Stewart, however, the accidental spill left her scrambling for a replacement outfit just minutes before her Halloween celebration.

“When I picked up the sweater, I said, ‘Oh, God, it’s so dirty,'” Stewart recalled, explaining that she had only about 10 minutes to get ready.

“The easiest costume was to get dressed up as a bum,” she told the audience.

Stewart said she looked at her disheveled appearance, decided she resembled someone who was hungry and homeless, and quickly created the handwritten sign that would later ignite the controversy.

Her explanation marked a noticeable departure from the account she gave when the backlash first erupted.

After deleting the Halloween photograph from Instagram, Stewart initially defended the costume as an attempt to draw attention to homelessness, describing the issue as one of America’s most serious ongoing crises.

She also pointed to her charitable work supporting organizations that help people experiencing homelessness, insisting that she never intended to offend anyone.

But that explanation did little to quiet the criticism.

Social media users questioned why a wealthy celebrity would portray poverty as a Halloween costume, while others expressed disbelief that the image had been used alongside advertising for home products.

One critic questioned how anyone could consider homelessness an appropriate costume when so many Americans are struggling financially.

Another suggested that Stewart should focus on directly supporting organizations serving people in need rather than defending the outfit.

As criticism continued, the television personality issued a second, more direct apology on November 1.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” Stewart wrote, acknowledging that her original statement had failed to adequately address the controversy.

She added that she understood many people were experiencing economic hardship and admitted that dressing as a homeless person had been insensitive rather than humorous.

“I am very sorry,” she concluded.

The second apology was also reportedly removed from her Instagram account.

Now, Stewart’s decision to explain the costume as a last-minute response to Melvin’s chocolate spill has prompted fresh scrutiny, with critics questioning why she initially presented the outfit as an effort to raise awareness.

Although Stewart connected the costume’s origins to the television mishap, she did not claim Melvin had suggested dressing as a homeless person. By her own account, the decision to create the outfit was hers.

The episode is an unusual controversy for Stewart, who has spent decades building a reputation as one of America’s most recognizable authorities on entertaining, cooking and home decorating.

It also comes at a time when homelessness and rising living costs remain major concerns for Americans, making the subject particularly sensitive.

Neither Melvin nor NBC has publicly taken responsibility for Stewart’s costume choice, and the host’s accidental spill appears to have been an ordinary live-television mishap.

For Stewart, however, what began as a hurried Halloween costume has become a days-long public relations controversy, made even more complicated by her changing explanations.

And while the celebrity entrepreneur has acknowledged that the costume was a mistake, her latest remarks have ensured that the controversy is far from forgotten.
