Lily Collins’ husband, Charlie McDowell, recently responded to online critics who slammed the couple for choosing a surrogate to welcome their newborn daughter. The actress, best known for Emily in Paris, shared the joyful news of their baby’s arrival in a heartfelt Instagram post.
Alongside a sweet photo of their baby girl wrapped in a blanket bearing the name “Tove,” Collins wrote, “Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way.”
While the post celebrated their growing family, some social media users wasted no time attacking the couple for opting for surrogacy. One commenter on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “So sad for this baby. Imagine taking it from its mother.”
McDowell swiftly addressed these harsh comments in an Instagram response, defending their choice with grace. “In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby,” he wrote, “it’s OK to not be an expert on surrogacy. It’s OK to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s OK to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s OK to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives.”
McDowell’s thoughtful response highlights how important it is to embrace kindness and understanding in moments of joy—and to remember that every family’s journey is unique.

Only hateful scum would have those comments!
