Another rock era is coming to a close—Foreigner’s powerhouse frontman Kelly Hansen has officially announced he’s stepping away from the mic after nearly two decades with the legendary band.
Hansen, 63, made the surprise announcement during the live finale of The Voice on Tuesday night. Standing center stage, he told the audience, “After 20 magical years performing with this band, this will be my last year with Foreigner. This summer, a new great voice will sing these songs for you, my friend Luis Maldonado.”
It was a fittingly dramatic moment for a singer who helped lead the band through a successful revival that kept their iconic hits—like I Want to Know What Love Is, Cold As Ice, and Hot Blooded—alive for new generations of fans.

In a statement released after the show, Hansen reflected on his long run with the group. “Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life. But it’s time to pass the mic,” he said. “Luis has the voice, the energy, and the soul to carry these songs into the future. I couldn’t be prouder to hand this off to him.”
Maldonado, who has been Foreigner’s longtime guitarist and a staple of the touring lineup, is stepping into some very big shoes. But he’s ready for the moment. “This music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” he said. “I’m ready to honor Foreigner’s legacy and bring my heart to every performance.”
Hansen joined Foreigner in 2005 after the band had cycled through various singers following the departure of original frontman Lou Gramm. His powerful vocals and stage presence helped restore the band’s live reputation and contributed to a surge in touring success during a time when many classic rock acts were fading from the spotlight. Under his lead, Foreigner played hundreds of shows across the world and introduced their hits to younger audiences through major tours, TV appearances, and even symphonic collaborations.
As for what’s next, Hansen hasn’t hinted at any future solo projects or retirement plans just yet. But one thing’s clear—this summer’s shows will be the last chance fans have to see him fronting the band that’s been his musical home for nearly 20 years.
Foreigner’s farewell tour with Hansen is set to wrap later this year, marking not just the end of a chapter, but a full-circle moment in classic rock history.
