A new biography claims Jackie Kennedy directly confronted her husband, President John F. Kennedy, over his rumored affair with Marilyn Monroe — and her reaction wasn’t subtle.
In JFK: Public, Private, Secret, author J. Randy Taraborrelli reveals that Jackie once told JFK, point-blank, “This one’s different, Jack. This one worries me.” The remark, reportedly overheard by a White House insider, showed that Jackie was not only aware of Monroe’s presence in her husband’s orbit — she saw her as a real threat.
“She didn’t know exactly what was going on between them,” Taraborrelli explains, “but she knew her husband well enough to sense that Marilyn wasn’t just another fling. Her language was telling — she’d tolerated rumors before, but this one shook her.”
The confrontation happened just before JFK’s 1962 birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden — the now-iconic event where Monroe sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” Jackie refused to attend and instead hosted a quiet family barbecue, signaling her disapproval.
Though Monroe and JFK were long rumored to have spent a weekend together at Bing Crosby’s house earlier that year, Taraborrelli casts doubt on that account. He spoke with Monroe’s longtime publicist, Pat Newcomb, who insisted, “That never happened.” Without that meeting, Taraborrelli says there’s no solid evidence they had a full-fledged affair — but the perception was powerful enough to unsettle Jackie.
After Monroe’s tragic death later that summer, Jackie was reportedly heartbroken. In a private conversation with family, she said it wasn’t fame that destroyed the actress — it was the men in her life.
