Darius McCrary, best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the hit ’90s sitcom Family Matters, was arrested on Sunday near the U.S.-Mexico border in California. The actor is currently being held in a San Diego jail on an out-of-state felony charge and is not eligible for bail at this time.
According to booking information, McCrary was taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol on what’s being listed as a “fugitive arrest” — a term used when someone is wanted in another state. His representative confirmed the warrant originated in Michigan, tied to a missed court appearance regarding unpaid child support.
McCrary’s rep claims the actor was improperly served. She says the court notice was sent to a P.O. Box and that he had only three days to appear in court — all while he was reportedly battling COVID-19 and didn’t check his mail until after the court date had passed.
This isn’t the first time McCrary has faced legal trouble over child support. He was previously arrested in 2023 for allegedly owing more than $52,000 in payments dating back to 2019. His first run-in over unpaid support reportedly happened in 2015, and by 2017, McCrary told a judge he wasn’t earning any money at the time.
Things became more complicated later that year when he was accused of dislocating his 2-year-old daughter’s arm. McCrary denied the allegation, claiming his then-wife Tammy Brawner fabricated the story. The couple split in 2017 after three years of marriage.
This most recent arrest, according to his team, stems from a complaint filed by the mother of his eldest child, Zecheriah. McCrary’s rep insists that he no longer owes child support in this case, pointing out that Zecheriah is now 18 and has a trust fund set up.
“His son is a trust fund baby and the only beneficiary,” the rep told Page Six. “But his mom wants the money.”
His rep also shed light on why McCrary was near the border in the first place. She claims the actor had partnered with a real estate developer in Tijuana to build shelter for the homeless population.
“Darius was doing a good deed when he discovered he had a felony warrant at the border of Mexico for a missed court appearance,” she said.
McCrary, a father of three, is expected to appear in San Diego court on Wednesday.
