A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Thursday morning at a prestigious Manhattan high school when a 16-year-old student died after jumping from a fifth-floor window.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. at Regis High School, an elite, all-male Jesuit school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. According to reports, the teen had been waiting outside a first-floor administrator’s office for a disciplinary matter before he walked upstairs to the fifth floor and fell shortly afterward near East 84th Street and Madison Avenue.

Emergency responders rushed the student to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he initially arrived in stable condition. However, he died from his injuries around 11:45 a.m.

The NYPD confirmed officers responded to a 911 call at 9:29 a.m. and found the teen with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated height. His identity has not yet been released as authorities notify his family. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Regis High School, a competitive tuition-free Catholic school with about 540 students, sent families a message confirming the tragic loss and offering support resources. A school spokesperson shared, “It is with heavy hearts that we write that one of our students tragically lost his life yesterday. We are deeply saddened by his loss and are doing everything we can to support his family during this unimaginable tragedy.”

Counselors and campus ministers have been made available to students and parents in the aftermath of the incident.

Local leaders expressed grief and concern as well. New York City councilmember-elect Virginia Maloney wrote that the tragedy reflects “every parent’s worst fear,” emphasizing the ongoing need for more mental health support in schools.

Witnesses said families were quickly notified of an “incident,” and students were sent home as the school community began processing the devastating news.
