Victoria Beckham’s long-running fashion label is back in the spotlight after new revelations about just how deeply the brand slipped into the red — and how the strain nearly broke her marriage to David Beckham.

Launched in 2008, Victoria’s namesake brand reportedly sank tens of millions of dollars into losses, with some of the most jaw-dropping expenses coming from her love of greenery. According to David, the former Spice Girl was spending about £70,000 ($93,000) a year on plants alone, plus another £15,000 ($19,000) annually for someone to simply water them. And that, he says, was “only the beginning.”

“For her to say, ‘We need some money, the business needs more money,’ that was hard for both of us,” David, 50, recalls. “Because I didn’t have the money to keep doing this, and eventually I was like, ‘This cannot continue.’”

He reveals he ultimately had to confront her with the truth: the business model wasn’t sustainable. “I decided to just tell the truth, exactly the way it is, and I didn’t know how she’d react,” he says. “I said, ‘Victoria, we have to change everything, restructure the business, and that’s gonna be painful.’” He adds that he had never seen anything “as hard as this to fix.”
