Christmas came early this year for one Michigan man who truly earned it.

An 88-year-old Army veteran has gone viral after revealing that he still works full-time at a local grocery store just to survive — a heartbreaking reality that sparked an outpouring of national generosity, raising more than a million dollars to help him finally retire.

Ed Bambas, a cashier at the Meijer store in Brighton, Michigan, told influencer Samuel Weidenhofer that he lost everything when his pension disappeared. Despite his age, he still clocks in for 40 hours a week because he simply doesn’t have enough income to live on.

“I retired from General Motors in ’99. In 2012, they went bankrupt and they took my pension away from me,” Bambas explained, fighting back tears in the now-viral video.

For years, Ed lived comfortably with his wife, Joan, in their home. But when she became gravely ill around the same time the pension vanished, everything collapsed at once. With medical bills piling up and no insurance left — “they took… all but $10,000 of my life insurance,” he said — Ed was forced to sell their home and property just to stay afloat.

Joan, his wife of more than 50 years, passed away seven years ago. “She expected to live the life I was hoping for,” Ed said quietly.

After her death, he struggled to rebuild. “I didn’t have enough income to pay for this place or all the other bills I had accumulated,” he told WXYZ. The grocery store job was the only job he could find — and physically handle.

“I’m fortunate God gave me a good enough body to be strong enough to stand there for eight, eight and a half hours a day,” he said.

But everything changed when Weidenhofer stopped at his checkout lane. After hearing Ed’s story, he tipped him $400 — and then created a GoFundMe to help him retire.

That fundraiser has now soared past $1.27 million, with tens of thousands of donors stepping up to support Ed. A top donation of $10,000 came from someone named “William Ackman” — possibly billionaire investor Bill Ackman — though that hasn’t been confirmed.

Celebrities like Charlie Puth and Russell Dickerson have also reacted, with Puth commenting, “I also donated to you sir.”

Weidenhofer, known for spreading kindness online, says he hasn’t yet told Ed the staggering total. He wants the reveal to happen safely, once a trust or secure account can be set up.

“Despite everything, Ed shows up every day with quiet dignity, strength, and perseverance,” the influencer wrote. “This is about giving him relief, comfort, and the peace of mind he deserves.”

The video has now been viewed more than 5 million times on TikTok — though Ed hasn’t seen it. “I’ve never been on those programs,” he admitted. “I still have a flip phone… just to talk to people.”

Soon, he may not have to clock into the grocery store anymore. And after everything he’s endured, no one deserves that peace more.
