Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz sparked major concern across the NFL on Sunday after a brutal hit left him carted off the field in tears — and many now fear the 35-year-old may have played his last snap in the league.

The injury happened late in the third quarter of the Commanders–Vikings matchup. Ertz jumped to catch a pass from quarterback Marcus Mariota when Vikings safety Jay Ward crashed straight into his leg mid-air. Ertz’s knee bent at a horrifying angle, stopping the stadium cold.

Trainers rushed onto the field, and moments later Ertz was loaded onto a cart. Cameras caught him wiping away tears as he was driven off — a tough scene for fans who know the veteran tight end has battled through injuries before. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn later told reporters the team fears Ertz suffered a torn ACL.

The moment has sparked widespread speculation online. While the pain and shock alone explain the emotional reaction, some wonder if Ertz — who turned 35 this season — recognized immediately that the injury could threaten the remainder of his NFL career.

Before the hit, Ertz was having a strong season with 50 catches, 504 yards, and 4 touchdowns, proving he still had plenty of playmaking ability left. Now, the big question is whether he’ll want — or be able — to make yet another comeback after a potentially season-ending injury.

The Commanders are expected to run further tests, but for now, the team — and fans — are bracing for difficult news.
