A Detroit Lions fan found himself at the center of an unexpected altercation with Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf on Sunday.
The incident, caught on CBS cameras, showed Metcalf grabbing the fan’s shirt and throwing a punch towards his face. The fan, wearing a black and blue shirt and a blue wig, seemed to have sparked the confrontation, though the exact cause of the altercation was unclear in the moment.

Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, the fan, later identified as Ryan Kennedy, explained that he had called Metcalf by his full name — DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf — which he said set off the wide receiver.
“Honestly, I was a little shocked. Everyone was talking to me, and I was a little rattled,” Kennedy said. “But I just want the Lions to win, baby.”
He added, “What, my full name isn’t DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf? He doesn’t like his government name, and I called him that. Then, he grabbed me and ripped my shirt.”
Despite the dramatic exchange, Metcalf wasn’t penalized during the game, as the incident took place off the field. CBS cameras just happened to catch the altercation as it unfolded. According to the Detroit Free Press, the NFL confirmed it couldn’t intervene because the incident occurred in the stands, not on the field.
Kennedy, who was reportedly allowed to remain in the stadium, seemed unfazed by the interaction, jokingly adding, “It was all in good fun, I guess.”
Metcalf may still face discipline, with potential fines or suspension on the table due to the physical nature of the confrontation. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the incident briefly, saying, “I heard about it, but I hadn’t seen it. I hadn’t had an opportunity to talk to DK.”
After the Steelers’ 29-24 victory, Metcalf did not speak with the media. He finished the game with four catches for 42 yards.
