A high school football player is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting his teammate just hours after the team celebrated a championship victory.
Xavier Mayfield, 18, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Dallas Police Department. The shooting occurred on the night of Saturday, December 20, around 9:30 p.m. at a home located in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive in Dallas. The victim, who has not been identified, was rushed to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Mayfield, who plays safety for the South Oak Cliff High School football team, allegedly shot his teammate in the neck following the team’s win. According to Fox 4, he is currently being held on a $50,000 bond in the Dallas County Jail.
Reports indicate that Mayfield told officers responding to the scene that he was in the bathroom on the second floor of the house and was about to head to his bedroom when the victim, still unidentified, called his name. When Mayfield turned around, a gunshot went off from the ARIS ABC Rifle he was holding. CBS Texas reported that Mayfield said the shooting was accidental.
After the shooting, Mayfield reportedly attempted to transport the victim to the hospital and called 911 before leaving the scene.
On December 22, the Next Generation Action Network (NGAN), a civil rights group based in Dallas, issued a statement suggesting that the shooting was accidental and that the victim was indeed a teammate of Mayfield’s.
